Purpose

  • To understand quality of life and social changes so as to provide basic data required for the establishment of social development policies by measuring social interests and subjective opinions in relation to people’s quality of life

Frequency Survey Frequency

  • Annual (Each area is surveyed with a two-year cycle.)

  • Total areas (10): Family, Education & Training, Health, Crime & Safety, Environment, Welfare, Social Participation, Leisure, Income, Consumption & Wealth, Labor

Scope and Coverage

  • Household members aged 13 and over who reside in 18,576 sample households across the nation

  • Reference period: May every year
  • Data collection period: 16 days

History

  • In March 1977, the 1st social survey was conducted for collecting basic data which included income & consumption, education, health, housing, environment and society.
  • In 1978, the System of Social Indicators was established for the first time. The system consisted of 8 survey areas of social concerns. Afterwards, from 1979 to 1984 the survey was conducted on an annual basis, covering 4∼5 survey areas.
  • In 1987, the first revision of the System of Social Indicators was carried out.
  • From 1985 to 1996, the survey was conducted with approximately 2∼3 areas annually.
  • In 1995, the second revision of the System of Social Indicators was carried out.
  • From 1998 to 2005, the survey was annually conducted and covered about 3∼4 areas a year (Each area was surveyed every four years).
  • In 2004, the third revision of the System of Social Indicators was carried out.
  • Until 2007, social survey was conducted with the same sample of the 「Economically Active Population Survey」, but in 2008, the survey started to be designed with its own sample and include 5 areas on an annual basis so that each area is surveyed every two years. Also, the「Social Statistics Survey」was renamed the「Social Survey」.
  • In 2012, the fourth revision of the System of Social Indicators was carried out.
  • In 2019, the fifth revision of the System of Social Indicators was carried out.
  • In 2019, the survey covered 5 areas such as welfare, social participation, culture & leisure, income & consumption, and labor.
  • In 2020, the survey covered 5 areas such as family, education & training, health, crime & safety and environment.
